Bob's Opens 2 Stores; Makes School Donations

By Home Furnishings Business in Community/Charitable Support on February 5, 2013

Retailer Bob's Discount Furniture will donate $25,500 to 15 Washington, D.C.-area schools to market the opening of two stores in Fairfax, Va., and Waldorf, Md.

The new stores - the fourth and fifth D.C.-area locations opened by the retailer since 2011 - demonstrate the company's continued interest in serving the nation's capital, and are expected to add more than 50 jobs to the local economy.

Colleen Wood, area manager for Bob's mid-Atlantic region, is acting store manager for Bob's 35,489-square-foot Fairfax store. Maurice McKisset, who previously managed the company's Hyattsville, Md., store, will manage the 30,103-square-foot Waldorf store.

Grand opening celebrations for each store will begin Thursday, Feb. 14.

"We're thrilled to expand our presence in the D.C. Metro area," said Bob Kaufman, Bob's president. "Especially in today's economy, people here really appreciate our approach of offering values on fashionable, high-quality furniture with no gimmicks, and the same low prices every day."

With the two new locations, Bob's Discount Furniture now has 45 stores in nine states (Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Virginia). The company opened three other D.C.-area locations during 2011.

To show its commitment to the new stores' communities, Bob's will present checks totaling $25,500 to 15 local schools during the grand openings. These funds are made possible by customer donations to collection jars located in the cafés found in every Bob's store, which offer free refreshments to shoppers.

Each month as part of its outreach program, Bob's Discount Furniture randomly selects seven schools in communities near its stores and makes a donation of $1,000 to each one. This month, the company is doubling its usual contributions, by providing funds for school education and arts programs in both Maryland and Virginia. Bob's has donated money to hundreds of schools over the past 20 years. Previous recipients have used the donations for such things as purchasing new art and classroom supplies, funding student activity groups and going on field trips.

Protect-A-Bed Products Help with Flood Relief

By Home Furnishings Business in Community/Charitable Support on February 4, 2013

The Massindo Group, the sole distributor of Protect-A-Bed products and owner of the Comforta mattress brand in Indonesia, donated 60 foam mattresses to victims of a massive flood in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Massindo Group employees, together with the Kopassus, the special cCommand forces in the region, distributed mattresses, food, flashlights, bottled water and medication to flood victims last week.

The flooding began Jan. 17 and many areas remain under water. Concerned the waters are not receding, the Massindo Group wanted to help flood victims who did not evacuate. "As we understand so far, many individuals preferred to stay at their homes, sleeping on the floor or floor mats," said Jeffri Massie, Massindo Group CEO. "We realized the need for mattresses is so important for citizens to achieve a proper rest, especially during this stressful time."

To distribute the mattresses, Massindo Group's team covered the mattresses with Protect-A-Bed waterproof mattress encasements and placed the boxed supplies on top. Because roads are impassable due to high water, the protected mattresses were floated to recipients.

"We think this is an ingenious way to transport essential supplies to those in need," said James Bell, CEO of Protect-A-Bed. "But it also proves that Protect-A-Bed mattress encasements can keep mattresses clean and dry, even from a flood."

The mattress donation is the latest example of Massindo Group's dedication to helping those in need.

"We've distributed food, bug spray, Kleenex and other medical supplies to nearly 500 people," Massie said. "We will continue to help and are hopeful the waters will recede soon."
