American Furniture Pays $15.8M for New Store Site

Englewood, Colo.-based American Furniture Warehouse Co. plans to develop a 600,000-plus-square-foot showroom and warehouse project in Gilbert, Ariz.

The new store will create 300 new jobs in the Phoenix market. The retailer paid about $15.8 million to purchase a 74.4-acre parcel.

Carman Joins Emerald Sleep as Marketing Manager

Joe Carman V has joined full-line furniture vendor Emerald Home Furnishings' Emerald Sleep Systems division in the newly created position of marketing manager.

In this role, Carman is responsible for managing brand and product development related to bedding, as well as sales training, strategic marketing planning and the creation of sales presentations to key furniture and mattress accounts. Carman reports to Al Matthews, Tacoma, Wash.-based Emerald€™s vice president of sales.

Carman€™s first project for Emerald Sleep Systems was the recent Las Vegas Furniture Market launch of the division€™s new Cool Jewel sleep collection, a new line of advanced cooling gel-infused memory foam mattresses, toppers, and pillows.

€œJoe hit the ground running and helped Emerald launch our new Cool Jewel line to a great response from retailers at the recent Las Vegas Market,€ Matthews said. €œWe are investing into the future of the Emerald Sleep Systems division; Joe will be a significant contributor as we expand the brand, product offerings and presence on retail sales floors.€

Carman has worked in the mattress industry for nearly 15 years and joins Emerald from his most recent roles as president of Recovery Systems International; and director of operations for T3 Recovery Products, where he was responsible for corporate and consumer-facing marketing, supply channel management, and international license sales in support of the Official Sleep Products of the Ironman brand. Prior to his licensing roles, Carman was a regional account manager for Spring Air where he developed territory sales initiatives, acquired new customers, developed training materials, and managed merchandising programs for a fourteen state region.

€œEmerald Sleep Systems offers me an exciting opportunity to continue to grow the bedding offering from Emerald Home Furnishings, a well-respected full-line home furnishings company,€ said Carman. €œWe are on a very positive path with the Cool Jewel gel memory foam line and I look forward to promoting an array of new products down the line that will appeal to our current furniture and mattress retail partners and open new sales opportunities for the company.€

Carman holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Washington and began his mattress career in the family business at Carman Manufacturing. Carman Manufacturing was run by his father, Joe Carman IV, a Russell Abolt Exceptional Service Award recipient who served the industry for many years.

ShopRTO.com Debuts

The home furnishings rent-to-own industry has launched shopRTO.com to promote the rent-to=own concept as a part of home shopping choices.

ShopRTO looks to be an online resources for the 95 percent of Americans whose first step in shopping for their home, according to studies, is to search the Internet.

ShopRTO will canvass experts from the home furniture, appliances, electronics and computer industries on the best ways and deals when shopping for home furnishings. The site will feature customer testimonials to provide real-life situations that Americans can relate when looking to make their home comfortable.

The site also will feature interior design and consumer finance experts as well as product reviews to provide consumers the information necessary when shopping for their home.

"The main focus of the site is to provide one website for consumers who want to make their home the most comfortable and attractive working with a budget," said Association of Progressive Rental Organizations Executive Director Bill Keese. "Rent to own and retail customers look for every option to find the best way to furnish their home that best fits their budget at that time in their lives. This site will give them the information plus much more. We're very excited."

One of the primary reasons for the creation of ShopRTO.com is the new trend towards renting, especially among Millennials or Generation Y. According to a survey by the Investment Company Institute, fewer Millennials are willing to take financial risks compared with Generation X or Baby Boomers.

ShopRTO.com wants to help those who choose renting home furnishings to provide them the most affordable way to make their home comfortable; or as the most affordable way to use renting as a path to owning more expensive home furnishings such as home theater systems, kitchen appliances and laptop computers.

San Diego-based Jerome's Furniture is seeking a furniture accessories buyer, and casual furniture supplier Gloster is looking for a national sales manager.

Those two positions are the first two listings for Home Furnishings Business' new Friday in Furniture Hiring snapshot, a posting of furniture industry hirings that are currently available.

Jerome's is looking for an experienced buyer to be responsible for accessory sales, margins, inventory turns, merchandise selection and vendor negotiations.

Specific responsibilities include the development of a merchandise plan based on fashion, sales trends, current merchandise lineup and competitive analysis. Candidates should also be comfortable negotiating pricing, terms, products and logistics with suppliers.

Other skills required are:

  • Develop and implement strategic growth plan for all accessory categories; 
  • Review sales and product statistics for effective merchandising decisions; 
  • Attend trade shows, factories and warehouses for most current product assortment;
  • Shop our competitors; create price point analysis and analyze trends for future purchases, and
  • Regularly meet with the visual team and merchandise to go review current lineup and create a go-forward plan.

  • Must have attended the High Point and/or Las Vegas Furniture Market;
  • Minimum three years experience in furniture accessories buying;
  • Hold a strong understanding of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook;
  • Exhibit outstanding communication skills; both verbal and written, and
  • Have the ability to organize, multi-task, and prioritize multiple demands.
