Jordan's "Monster" Deal

By Home Furnishings Business in Advertising on April 2, 2010

Jordan's Furniture, Avon, Mass., has launched another in its series of "Monster" promotional campaigns, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.

This time around, customers who make a purchase at Jordan's Boston-area stores through May 2 won't have to pay for their merchandise if a Boston Red Sox player hits the image of a Jordan's Furniture baseball on the company sign at Fenway Park between July 15 and the end of the regular season on Oct. 3.

The sign measures 6 feet by 12 feet and is 421 feet from home plate. The only restrictions are that the ball cannot bounce off a bleacher seat or a fan's hands.

"Jordan's has always found ways to touch their customers with their corny, slap-dash humorous ads," said Chris Cakebread, a Boston University advertising professor, in the report.

If the Red Sox don't hit the baseball image on Jordan's sign this season, Jordan's will give customers who shopped at the chain during the promotional period a coupon worth 20 percent off any future purchase.

WHFA Partners with Banner Marketing

By Home Furnishings Business in Internet on April 2, 2010

The Western Home Furnishings Association has partnered with Banner Marketing, an integrated marketing and advertising firm in Spokane, Wash., to develop and enhance the marketing efforts of its nearly 800 independent home furnishings retailers.

"We chose Banner as our preferred partner because of their profound knowledge in the home furnishings industry," said Sharron Bradley, executive director of the WHFA. "Banner brings more than 25 years of experience and has clearly developed a program that brings measurable results to furniture dealers."

The WHFA represents independent dealers across 12 western states. The association offers its members business solutions and support by providing information, programs and services that improve business opportunities and management practices.

"We are excited to help WHFA members grow their businesses through innovative marketing," said John Dresel, CEO and owner of Banner Marketing. "We aim to create everything a small business needs to set-up, maintain, track and analyze the effectiveness of an overall advertising program by integrating traditional media with their Web site."

Banner creates traditional marketing pieces such as attractive circulars that are seen in Sunday newspapers, but it takes marketing several steps further by also building cutting-edge Web sites for furniture retailers that are based on intuitive consumer shopping behavior. Banner provides twice-monthly updates to the Web sites, saving the furniture retailers time and effort, that align with the store€™s current promotions. The Web sites have built-in features such as: product descriptions that are search engine optimized; data collection; coupon functionality; and viral elements.

"What really makes Banner different, is our ability to observe consumer behavior, aggregate the information by geographic territory and then react in real time, updating a business' Web site based on these behaviors to generate additional traffic to the retailer," Dresel said.

New York AG Files Action Against Tempur-Pedic

By Home Furnishings Business in Legal on April 1, 2010

Premium mattress and pillow manufacturer Tempur-Pedic International Inc. (NYSE: TPX), Lexington, Ky., confirmed Tuesday that it has been notified of an action filed against the company by New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo.

As Tempur-Pedic has previously disclosed, the New York Attorney General's office had requested that the company consider discontinuing its unilateral retail price policy in the State of New York, and informed the company that it may bring an enforcement action against the company under New York law if Tempur-Pedic chose not to do so.

On Monday, the Office of the Attorney General filed suit in New York state court against Tempur-Pedic with respect to this matter.

"We are disappointed with the New York Attorney General's action earlier this week," said Tempur-Pedic CEO Mark Sarvary. "It was
preceded by a lengthy antitrust investigation in which the Company cooperated fully."

In his complaint, Cuomo does not charge Tempur-Pedic with any violation of state or federal antitrust law; instead he claims the company violated a 1975 New York state law which declares certain contractual provisions to be unenforceable.

"We believe the Attorney General's claim that Tempur-Pedic violated state law is simply wrong, and we intend to defend the case vigorously," Sarvary said.
