Brewbaker's, northern Michigan's oldest family furniture retailer, has sold its two stores to the state's largest furniture retailer,
Art Van Furniture.
Brewbaker's Furniture, which began in 1959, has two locations in Petoskey and Onaway and billed itself "northern Michigan's largest home furnishings retailer."
"It is with mixed emotions we have made this decision because this business has been strong and profitable and our sons looked forward to carrying on the company name," said Kathy McConnell, owner of Brewbaker's Furniture. "We decided after decades of business this was the best decision for our family and our employees."
"It's really a win-win situation," said Art Van Elslander, founder and chairman of Art Van Furniture, Warren, Mich. "It's one family business shaking hands with another family business and the people of northern Michigan will enjoy the same quality, selection, and value of Art Van Furniture that the rest of the state enjoys."
Art Van Furniture plans to retain the 80-plus employees of Brewbaker's Furniture, including two sons who helped managed the two stores.
"This is the only company we would consider selling to because Art Van would continue to provide jobs and growth opportunities for both our stores in Onaway and Petoskey," McConnell said.

John Thomas Furniture, a division of
Whitewood Inds., will show at the upcoming
Tupelo Furniture Market Aug. 20-22.
The company said there's an opportunity in the strengthening economy to establish its position as a leading casual dining source, and the Tupelo market will help in that endeavor.
According to Bryan Sprinkles, sales and marketing manager for John Thomas, the company recently completed its fiscal year and has been evaluating the value of regional markets for some time. With the 2009/2010 fiscal year being its best in three, the time is right.
Both our customers and sales representatives, have encouraged our exhibiting beyond High Point, Sprinkles said. "Though the
High Point Furniture Market is still absolutely the premier Market, there are those customers who still by either necessity, or choice, shop regionally. Tupelo is the Southeasts home furnishings show and our business is growing. Its time we position ourselves there strongly."
The company's 3,500-square-foot showroom will focus on its core competencyvalueand will be located in Building 1, Booths 1119-1319.
"Its no secret that Tupelo is recognized as being a great bargain, best value show," Sprinkles said. "But values not just about lowest price, rather what dining options give shoppers the most options, functionality, finishes, etcetera, for the money. Thats what dealers attending the show and discovering us for the first time will recognize, an overall understanding of what value is, beyond just a dollar sign.
John Thomas is also considering Midwest venues, but has not yet decided when those might be added.
