Industrial Design Student Receives Scott Morgan Design Scholarship

Loreta Haaker, a graduate student at Pratt Institute in New York City, is the second recipient of the Scott Morgan Design Scholarship and a $5,000 check.

She is a master of industrial design degree candidate for 2017, and a furniture and lighting product designer from Lima, Peru.

“Loreta combines professionalism and precision in her work with creative and poetic thinking,” said Constantin Boyn, chair of industrial design at Pratt Institute. “Her projects are often infused with personal memories of her childhood and upbringing in Peru. She is a great presence in our program, adding to a diverse body of graduate students at Pratt.”

The selection committee named Haaker as the most worthy recipient of this year’s award due to her creativity and innovative approach to problem solving coupled with her ability to execute a scalable project with applications for human proportion.

The scholarship reflects the support and mentoring the late Scott Morgan gave to aspiring young furniture designers. It is intended to fuel a passion for home furnishings product design and development embodied in Morgan’s nearly 40-year career in contemporary furniture design.

It was created shortly before Morgan’s death in September 2013 as a vehicle for business colleagues, friends and family to honor his contributions to the home furnishings industry.
