Ikea Dining Table Cooks

Here’s a busy family’s dream—a dining table that cooks. Home furnishings retailer Ikea is showcasing in Milan a high-tech concept kitchen that rethinks the busiest room in the house.

America’s kitchens may soon be transformed even more by technology.

IKEA’s concept kitchen for 2025, now on display in Milan, does away with the big refrigerator. Instead, we’ll rely on near-instantaneous deliveries by drone or driverless cars as well as a pantry that uses induction cooling technology to keep food fresh and reduce food waste.

And the dining room table will be more than just a place to eat, play, work — and even do food prep. It will also be a stove, thanks to induction coils underneath the table surface and a camera above the table that recognizes objects. As the Swedish furniture maker imagines it, an overhead projector will then help guide the cooking process, even offering suggestions on what to cook.
