The award recognizes companies that seek out innovative processes and solutions that demonstrate excellence throughout the production process.
“The Pine Tree Award allows us to honor the creativity and innovative spirit of our member companies,” said Dan Crowley, Executive Director, MWPA. “Thos. Moser is the epitome of how Maine-based wood product manufacturers are not only competing in, but succeeding in an ever-changing and always demanding marketplace.”
“We’ve adopted new processes very thoughtfully – we’re looking to achieve balance between man and machine which allows for planning both precision and spontaneity into our processes,” said Rick Foss, production manager for Thos. Moser, Auburn, Me. “A hands-on approach is what makes Thos. Moser furniture special. Each piece individually signed by the craftsman who made it, allowing it to stand out as a truly unique piece in this age of mass production.”
The advent of new technology is coupled with the way Thos. Moser manages its supply chain. By adopting a “lean manufacturing” model, the company is alleviated of unnecessary inventory which can contribute to additional waste, from a time and materials standpoint.
“One of the most important advances in our process has been the introduction of ‘lean manufacturing’ to the shop floor,” said Tim McIntyre, supply chain manager for Thos. Moser. “This process has helped us to trim raw material stock levels down to just what’s needed, when it’s needed.”
Thos. Moser will join fellow members of the WMPA on Wednesday at Bates College for an Awards banquet, where WMPA members will have an opportunity to tour the Thos. Moser workshop beforehand.
