Purchasing a new home usually requires an investment in furniture, including perhaps a bed or a sofa, and maybe some decorations.
With housing sales on the rebound, some furniture stocks have been moving higher. The Household-Office Furniture industry group was ranked No. 31 out of IBD's 197 groups as of Thursday. That's up from No. 55 three weeks ago and No. 70 six weeks ago.

Americans spent at the fastest pace in five months in February, boosting retail spending 1.1 percent compared with January. About half the jump reflected higher gas prices, but even excluding gas purchases, retail sales rose 0.6 percent.
The report Wednesday from the Commerce Department showed that Americans kept spending last month despite higher Social Security taxes that took effect this year. The retail sales report is the government's first look each month at consumer spending, which drives about 70 percent of economic activity.

"A big trend today is for clean lines and minimalist design as opposed to overstuffed furniture," says Julie Holzman of Holzman Interiors in New York. "That simplified look lends itself to incorporating modern Asian elements."
