Nichols & Stone Could Shut Down

By Home Furnishings Business in Case Goods on June 2008 Case good vendor Nichols & Stone, Gardner, Mass., might not reopen after its normal plant shutdown during the first two weeks of July, according to a report Saturday in the Telegram of Worcester, Mass.

“We still have a little ray of hope,” President Carlton “Tuck” Nichols told the paper, adding that he is talking with several parties who might be able to help the company reopen later in July.

Nichols & Stone is one of the oldest furniture makers in the country, tracing back to 1762 as Nichols Bros. Chair Manufactory in Westminster, with eight generations of Nichols leading the business.

Nichols & Stone had earlier said it planned to convert from manufacturing to assembling and finishing components sourced overseas.
