J.C. Penney, Stokke Recall Products

By Home Furnishings Business in on August 2007 The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with J.C. Penney Corporation Inc., Plano, Texas; and Stokke, Kennesaw, Ga., announced voluntary recalls yesterday of about 4,000 J.C. Penney spindle-back side chairs and around 1,000 Sleepi Crib foam mattresses from Stokke.

The J.C. Penney chairs pose a hazard of the wood stretchers splitting while in use and the chair collapsing. The retailer has received four reports of chairs splitting and collapsing. One minor whiplash injury has been reported.

This recall involves the Windsor Spindle-Back side chair sets, consisting of four 36-inch high solid hardwood chairs, with painted backs and legs are painted white and a seat in natural wood color. The Malaysian-made chairs were sold exclusively through J.C. Penney catalog and online stores from April 2006 through June 2007 for about $250 per set. Consumers should stop using the recalled chairs immediately and contact J.C. Penney to obtain free replacement chairs. Consumers also can return the chairs to their closest J.C. Penney store for a full refund.

J.C. Penney’s Recall Hotline is (888) 333-6063; the CPSC Recall Hotline is (800) 638-2772.

The Stokke crib mattresses were recalled for improper sizing, which created a gap posing an entrapment hazard to young children.

No injuries or incidents with the cribs or matresses have been reported.

Only oval-shaped Sleepi cribs with foam mattresses sold under the following model numbers are the subject of this recall: 660321, 660320, 660301, 660305, 660318, 652268, 652269, 652246, 652247 and 652248. The cribs were sold in a variety of colors, including white, walnut, natural, cherry and whitewash. The model number can be found on the packaging and underside of the crib.

The Italian-made goods were sold at juvenile product retailers nationwide and via the Internet from September 2006 through March 2007 for between $750 and $850. Consumers should stop using the cribs immediately and contact Stokke to receive a free replacement mattress.

Consumers may call Stokke toll-free at (877) 978-6553, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Eastern Time), Monday-Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.stokkeusa.com.
