Broyhill to Close Second-to-Last Wood Plant

Broyhill Furniture Inds. announced Friday that it will close its penultimate domestic wood furniture factory, the 522,000-sqaure-foot Pacemaker case goods plant in Lenoir, N.C., by the end of August.
Broyhill, a wholly owned subsidiary of Furniture Brands International, was until recent years among the largest wood furniture manufacturers in the country. After the Pacemaker shutdown, the company will have one remaining domestic case goods plant .
The Pacemaker plant was built in 1971 and currently employs 692 people. After these layoffs become effective, Broyhill will continue to employ around 1,900 people in North Carolina.
Broyhill, one of the companies that made North Carolina a furniture manufacturing powerhouse, now mostly sources wood furniture for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and home entertainment.
