Design Camp Comes to High Point

By Home Furnishings Business in on April 17, 2013

The Antique & Design Center  team knows that with all the familiar faces to see and fun gatherings to join, visiting the bi-annual High Point Market can be a bit like returning to summer camp year after year, minus the arts and crafts hour.

Indeed, the only real difference at this year's inaugural Taste of Design Camp event is that the hot dogs and s'mores are gourmet.

The fun starts on opening day, Saturday, April 20 at 3:30, when Design Camp leaders Kelli Ellis and Lori Dennis, take the ADC seminar stage for "Taste of Design Camp." The event is a two-hour seminar designed to give attendees a sample of what is normally an intensive, two-day conference for designers interested in furthering their careers that is staged by Ellis and Dennis in major cities across the country.

According to Karen Luisana, executive director of the Antique & Design Center, "These HGTV interior designers have spent decades educating designers and design enthusiasts, and they are heading to Market with a panel of special-guest camp counselors who are also all experts in their respective fields."

Panelists for Taste of Design Camp include Leslie Newsome Rascoe, decoration and design editor, Veranda Magazine; Lisa Newsom, Veranda Magazine; Helene Hollub, principal of Hollub Homes Inc., a premier building and design company in South Florida; Katy Garrett, a nationally recognized interior design business coach, systems educator for Connexion Software LLC, and award-winning custom home furnishings consultant; blogger Ronda Carman, All The Best Blog; Bill Indursky, VandM.com; Traci Zeller, Traci Zeller Designs; and Lisa Mende, founder and principal of Lisa Mende Design and winner of the High Point Market's 9th Style Spotter contest.

Like any good summer camp, the emphasis here is on special activities for all, so attendees will be served gelato and coffee courtesy of Scowters.com between sessions. Following the panel discussion, there will be a book signing with Lori Dennis, Lisa Newsom Rascoe and Ronda Carman, whiskey tastings by Troy & Son's, live music by the Bad Raccoons, and of course, shopping throughout the Antique & Design Center.

The fun continues outside under the stars in the Market Square Courtyard from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Design Camp in the Courtyard cocktail party sponsored by Market Square. There, all of the Design Camp leaders and panelists, as well as other ADC Lecture Series speakers, will gather under the big tent and around the fire pits with campers for a special meet-and-greet that includes another book signing, more music by the Bad Raccoons, and plenty of camp-appropriate eats like gourmet hotdogs and s'mores.

"We'll also be supplying the Design Campers with mini ADC flash-lights as a special gift on a first-come, first-serve basis," Luisana says. "We figure that after all the whiskey tastings, shopping and good times, everybody that attends will need a little help finding their way home that evening!"
