Boiler Room Bar to Host Music, Whiskey and More

By Home Furnishings Business in on April 15, 2013

The Antique & Design Center  is getting ready to make Spring High Point Market 2013 one big Gatsby-esque party, complete with whiskey tastings and a full slate of home furnishings industry musicians on the boards at the Boiler Room Bar on the ground floor of Market Square.

The landmark Boiler Room Bar has been shuttered since the original sale and subsequent renovation of the Market Square complex to Merchandise Mart Properties years ago. According to Karen Luisana, managing director of the Antique & Design Center, the later addition of a small café did little to enhance the space and made finding the spot nearly impossible for anyone who had never previously bellied up to the bar.

Following last Market, however, the Tin Roof Café was torn out, fully exposing Market Square's iconic smoke stack on the building's ground floor and providing easy access to the old Boiler Room Bar for the first time ever. The Antique & Design Center team and exhibitors set about giving the place a facelift and Dovetail, a manufacturer showing in the adjacent Salon at Market Square, donated bar stools.

"It's all about great design and preservation here at the Antique & Design Center and we're thrilled to be able to bring back some of the spirit of the old bar, as well as the original, raw grandeur of the building itself," Luisana said.

To celebrate the re-opening of the Boiler Room Bar, Luisana is issuing an open invitation to musicians across the industry to come to Market with instruments in tow. Musicians who would like to reserve specific time slots on the Boiler Room Bar stage should go online

"The home furnishings industry is home to a creative bunch of personalities, and there are many tremendous talents working among us,"  Luisana said.

Along with great music, award-winning Asheville, N.C., distilling company Troy & Sons, will be giving away whiskey tastings in the Boiler Room Bar beginning on Friday, April 19. Beer and wine will also be served, along with "speak-easy eats" from the String & Splinter Club starting at 5 p.m. Troy & Sons whiskey tastings will continue throughout Market week, as will the live music, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
