Adelstein Retires from Bob's

By Home Furnishings Business in Furniture Retailing on April 1, 2013

Stan Adelstein is retiring as chairman of furniture retailer Bob's Discount Furniture after working for the company for more than two decades.

Adelstein has been chairman for the last six years, and prior to that was the retailer's CEO from 2005 through 2006.

"It's been an honor being Stan's partner for the past 20 years and seeing a master at work," said Bob Kaufman, Bob's co-founder and president. "Stan has been a driving force in building Bob's into one of the country's premiere furniture retailers."

Adelstein, who learned retailing in a family business in the Boston area, joined Bob's as a consultant soon after the retailer started in 1991, and became one of the company's original partners. He was instrumental in shaping the company's merchandise mix, marketing strategy and Internet initiatives, launching the company's e-commerce Web site before most other furniture retailers tapped the potential of online sales.

"Stan is one of the rocks on which Bob's was built," said Ted Enlgish, CEO. "His vision, passion and creativity are unmatched and we wish him the very best in his retirement. He will be missed greatly by our team."

During Adelstein's years with Bob's, the company has grown from a single store with a handful of staff in Newington, Conn., to a chain of 45 stores employing more than 3,000 people across nine East Coast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Adelstein, 76, plans to devote more time after his retirement to his family, gardening, and fishing.

"I want to thank my partners and all the members of the Bob's organization for letting me be part of their extended family for so many wonderful years," he said. "Together, we developed a truly unique and successful business model - based on value, integrity and honesty."
