Furniture Buying Index Up a Point

By Home Furnishings Business in economic news on January 8, 2013

America€™s Research Group's Furniture Buying Index rose one point this month to a reading of 72.

€œConsumers feel slightly better about the coming year, but they are worried about health care costs increasing as well as lower take home pay,€ said Britt Beemer, chairman of Charleston, S.C.-based ARG. €œAmericans are hesitant to make big ticket purchases since they are not sure how increased health care costs and social security deduction increases will affect their disposable income in 2013. Consumers are cautious about making major purchases like furniture while they determine their financial situation for the coming year.€

The Furniture Buying Index is compiled each month by America's Research Group from interviews with 5,000 to 8,000 consumers across the country. In a typical month, 80 percent of the consumers interviewed can name a specific furniture item they intend to buy.The Index's mark signifies what percent of the benchmark 80 percent actually have a particular item in mind.

America's Research Group, a full-service consumer behavior research company, provides research and strategic planning services to leading manufacturers and retailers of consumer goods across North America.
