HPU Student Honored with Haverty Cup

By Home Furnishings Business in Community/Charitable Support on April 24, 2012

Shannon Taylor, a senior majoring in home furnishings and marketing with a minor in interior design at High Point University, has been honored as the recipient of the 2012 Haverty Cup Award.

Taylor, a native of Winston-Salem, received $2,500 and a plaque for her extensive accomplishments in the home furnishings programs. She has earned Dean's List recognition every semester during her four years at the university, was a recipient of the Celia Moh Scholarship, and was selected as a member of the Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society in Business. She's also been an active participant in the High Point Market by working for the Sustainable Furnishings Council and Century Furniture Co.

The Haverty Cup was established in 1988 by Rawson Haverty Sr. to honor annually the most outstanding home furnishings graduate of HPU. Haverty established the award to encourage students to pursue a career in the home furnishings industry. Steve G. Burdette, executive vice president of Stores of Haverty Furniture Cos., and Scott T. Miles, vice president of stores and development, presented Taylor with the award on campus.

"Shannon is an outstanding student who has excelled in every home furnishings class and program," said Richard Bennington, Paul Broyhill Professor of Home Furnishings at HPU. "Her friendly, outgoing personality and her dedication to a home furnishings career have made her a great student to have on campus. We are proud that she is our 2012 recipient of the Haverty Cup."

Atlanta-based Havertys operates 119 showrooms in 17 states in the South and Midwest.
