Government Directive Good for Bio-Based Products

By Home Furnishings Business in Green on April 16, 2012

A recent directive from President Obama will increase the federal government€™s purchase of products made with bio-based content over the next two years.

Signature Crypton Carpet, Dalton, Ga., its workers and the environment stand to benefit, said Signature Crypton Vice President of Sales John McIntosh.

The presidential directive requires U.S. federal government procurement offices to purchase more of the government's products and supplies--things such as paints, soaps, detergents, synthetic carpeting and turf--that are made with bio-based ingredients.

Signature Crypton Carpet qualifies because its high performance carpets include Universal Textile Technologies' BioCel, a natural oil-based polyol derived from American-grown crops. Using BioCel allows Signature Crypton Carpet to displace some of the petroleum previously used in its manufacturing process.

"Environmental responsibility is our business standard," McIntosh said. "As the leading producer of carpets produced from natural oil-based polyols, we feel that doing the right thing isn't optional, it's our duty. The government, American workers and the environment will all benefit from this directive."

President Obama's new directive augments the foundation of existing Farm Bills passed by Congress in 2002 and 2008. The aim is to foster new and innovative businesses and create good job opportunities throughout the country, including the rural areas where farmers raise crops used for manufacturing of bio-based products.

Signature Crypton Carpet is a vertically integrated carpet mill, providing its customers with design services, yarn extrusion, state-of-the-art tufting and coating. For more than a decade, Signature has been a leader in producing carpet for the hospitality industry.
