The Furniture Buying Index rose another point this month to a reading of 73, taking the index back to its January level driven in part by income tax refunds, according to America's Research Group.
Consumers are pleased to learn that their income tax refunds are $180 more than they expected," said Britt Beemer, chairman of Americas Research Group. "Some of these consumers will spend that extra money on buying new furniture."
Beemer said consumers remain cautious with spending and "retailers must offer great values to get consumers into their stores."
America's Research Group compiles the Furniture Buying Index each month from interviews with between 5,000 and 8,000 consumers across the country. In a typical month, 80 percent of the consumers interviewed can name a specific furniture item they intend to buy. The Index signifies what percent of the benchmark 80 percent actually have a particular item in mind.
