Sleep Country Collects Record Amount for Foster Kids

By Home Furnishings Business in on January 26, 2012 Bedding retailer Sleep Country USA wrapped up 2011 by collecting more than 101,000 items for foster children through its Foster Kids Program.

The program, which the Seattle-based retailer started six years ago, collects clothing, pajamas, shoes, school supplies, coats and at the holidays, gifts and toys. Last year was the company's most successful drive in the program's history.

€œSleep Country USA makes an invaluable difference in the lives of many foster children in the Northwest,€ said Terry Fennell, president of the board of directors, Oregon Foster Parent Association. €œSeeing a child€™s eyes light up when they receive a new coat or backpack from one of the company€™s drives is priceless. The generosity of companies like Sleep Country is integral for our organization€™s success and their achievement is a victory for our entire community.€

In addition to these items, Sleep Country also raised over $125,000 from its annual Pajama Bowl events to fulfill foster children€™s little wishes, such as attending summer camps where they are often reunited with their siblings, obtaining tutoring and counseling, playing a musical instrument, or participating in a sport.

€œWe€™re thrilled to report the tremendous results of our efforts to help the regions€™ foster children and their families,€ said Terry Horsley, vice president of brand strategy for Sleep Country USA. €œWe are humbled by the kindness and openhandedness of individuals, families, businesses, and organizations in the Northwest and overjoyed to be able to contribute to our community in a way that will help it grow, thrive and position at-risk children for a successful future.€

The most successful year-to-date for the company€™s Foster Kids Program, Sleep Country attributes its record-breaking donations to the generosity of local businesses, organizations and community members who supported the Sleep Country Foster Kids Program efforts. Donations were distributed to the nearly 20,000 foster children in the Pacific Northwest by Sleep Country€™s 16 foster care partner organizations. The company started 2012 with its annual Pajama Drive for foster children running through Feb. 26.
