Hyman's Closing in Rock Island, Ill.

By Home Furnishings Business in Retail Closings on December 28, 2010

Rock Island, Ill., furniture retailer Hyman's Furniture Store, will close after 90 years in business, the Quad City Business Journal reported Monday.

The store will close after selling off its inventory. Stanley Goldman, whose mother, Rose, opened the store in 1920, will be 90 in April.

The decision to close "has been going back and forth between the family for months and months,€ Store Manager David Rockwell said in the report. "Stanley will be 90 in April. He wanted to make sure we do this on our terms, that there not be a need to necessarily do it. Business has been down a little bit. But overall, we are doing well."

The Goldman family has donated several downtown buildings to the city for other uses.

Plans for the properties include building more apartments and a new business incubator called the District Retail Entrepreneurship Program.
