Tempur-Pedic Kicks off Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

By Home Furnishings Business in Bedding on November 2, 2010 Bedding supplier Tempur-Pedic  (NYSE: TPX) has started its National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month with its 2010 Tempur-Pedic Hugs Back campaign.

This year's campaign provides consumers two different ways to get involved in the fight against pancreatic cancer. First, Tempur-Pedic will contribute $10 to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for every consumer who tests a Tempur-Pedic mattress at a participating authorized retailer in November, up to $100,000. As a second part of the campaign, Tempur-Pedic has introduced a limited edition of the company's My Tempur-Pedic Teddy Bear€”a portion of sales from the $59 bears will support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's mission to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer.

"Those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are faced with daunting survival statistics and an uphill battle during treatment," said Rick Anderson, president of Tempur-Pedic North America. "Last year, sales of the My Tempur-Pedic Teddy Bears helped raise $500,000 for pancreatic cancer research. This year, we are excited to offer consumers another way to get involved by simply trying out a Tempur-Pedic mattress at a local store."

Twenty dollars from the sale of each of the new, cream-colored My Tempur-Pedic Teddy Bears will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The bears are filled with the same proprietary material featured in the company's mattresses, pillows and accessories. This year's bear once again has the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network logo and comes with a cause bracelet to help spread the word about pancreatic cancer and encourage others to join the fight.

"Tempur-Pedic has been a tremendous corporate champion in the fight against this devastating disease and we salute them for their ongoing support of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network," said Brian Doremus, director of corporate relations for Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Seventy-six percent of people with pancreatic cancer succumb to the disease within the first year of diagnosis and 94 percent within five years. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States and has the lowest survival rate among the top 10 cancer killers. There are no early detection methods, few effective treatment options and there is no cure.

The mattress trial donation program begins today and will continue throughout the month of November or until the $100,000 fundraising goal has been met.
