Michigan furniture chain fares better than many competitors

Warren -- Art Van Furniture, Michigan's largest furniture chain, is pulling out of the recession a winner, finding ways to get bigger even as the home furnishings industry nosedives for a second consecutive year. The 33-location, Warren-based retailer is hiring, acquiring smaller furniture businesses, opening more stand-alone bedding stores, forming a partnership with a television store chain and ramping up its TV advertising campaigns under new Chief Executive Officer Kim Yost.
