One of the most iconic chairs in modern design is returning to its structural roots, thanks to more environmentally-friendly developments in manufacturing. Furniture maker Herman Miller this week announced that its Eames Molded Plastic Chair and Side Chair will now be produced in fiberglass, more than 20 years after designer Ray Eames abandoned the material over environmental concerns.

Both models will be available this summer in various bases and nine "vintage" colors.

The Michigan-based Herman Miller began producing Ray and Charles Eames' chair in 1950, using fiberglass-reinforced plastic.

Made in the USA Back in Style for Small Businesses

By Aggregated Content in Bedding on May 22, 2013 from http://beaconnews.suntimes.com/business/20279083-420/made-in-the-usa-back-in-style-for-small-businesses.html

When Martin Rawls-Meehan started making adjustable beds in 2004, it was a foregone conclusion that key parts would be made overseas. It was cheaper to manufacture in Taiwan than in the U.S. And from Taiwan it was easier to ship to customers in Asia.

But this year, his company, Reverie, began making some of its beds entirely in a factory in New York. Shipping costs from Taiwan have soared between 50 percent and 60 percent since the company was founded.

Inmod Buys Chiasso Trademark, URL

By Home Furnishings Business in Acquisition on May 22, 2013

Furniture retailer and mail-order catalog Chiasso has been given new life.

The retailer, shuttered in February, was acquired by former competitor Inmod. At the time of the closing, Chiasso had more than 12 stores and an e-commerce site with annual sales of $20 million.

This is the second time the brand has been rejuvenated.

In 2003, Chiasso was purchased at a bankruptcy auction by Chris Segal (son of Crate & Barrel http://www.crateandbarrel.com/ founders) and his partner Greg Kadens, and has since been operated by Chiasso Acquisitions, LLC.

"In a sea of online competition, we have always held Chiasso in the highest regard," said Alan Finkelstein, Inmod.com co-founder. "They were instrumental in revolutionizing the way people shopped for furniture and brought validity to the idea of experiencing and purchasing it online. They did it before anyone else did, and they did it better than most."

Upon learning of Chiasso Acquistion's permanent closure of Chiasso this year, Finkelstein and Inmod.com co-founder Casey Choron acquired the Chiasso trademark and Web site URL from Chiasso Acquisitions.

"We did so to honor the Chiasso identity and its customers because it's our wish to carry on their tradition of providing them with stylish design at great prices, backed by excellent customer service and an impeccable reputation, which are core values of the Inmod brand," Choron said.

While the Chiasso online store has gone off-line, the Web address is still active and now forwards to Inmod, onto a page providing Chiasso customers with a welcome, and an introductory discount. Details will be announced in the third quarter 2013 on how the Chiasso brand will be integrated or re-established.

Inmod's focus is on modern furniture and décor. The online retailer has been recognized by Inc. http://www.inc.com/ magazine's 500|5000 list as one of the fastest growing privately held companies for two consecutive years.

Call for Design Excellence Awards

By Home Furnishings Business in on May 22, 2013

Companies interested in entering the 2013 Design Excellence Awards competition for casual furnishings products have until June 21 to submit entries.

The annual awards competition is coordinated by the International Casual Furnishings Association and is the only design recognition for home furnishings and accessories produced for outdoor living.

This year, for the first time, the competition is open to companies that are not ICFA members. However, entries in all categories except for fabric must still come from companies that are exhibitors at the September 17-20 International Casual Furniture & Accessories Market in Chicago.

Entries are now being accepted in 11 categories: dining or bar table, dining or bar chair, chaise lounge, lounge seating - cushion, lounge seating - non-cushion, shade product, outdoor lighting product, heating/firepit, fabric, complementary casual product and outdoor carpeting/rugs/ flooring.

Competition rules and entry guidelines can be found online. The entry fee is $100 for each product entered by an ICFA member and $500 for each product entered by a non-member company.

The Design Excellence judging will take place Thursday, Sept. 5. The 11 category winners will be announced prior to the market, and the awards will be presented Tuesday, Sept. 17, in company showrooms.

All companies submitting entries are urged to attend the ICFA Awards Gala Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the Chicago Field Museum, where the Lillian B. Winchester "Best of Show" Award will be presented from among the 11 category winners. Additional awards to be presented at the gala include the ICFA Manufacturer of the Year, Sales Representative of the Year and the Apollo Awards for retail excellence. In addition, the annual tribute to the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient will be included in the evening's program.

Ticket information for the ICFA Awards Gala will be available soon.
